Table 2. Summary of Fowl River at Bellingrath Gardens Enterococcus sampling results
Fowl River is located within the Fowl River Watershed. With its headwaters located near the Mobile suburb of Theodore, AL, the Fowl River Watershed encompasses approximately 39,769 acres and drains most of the southern part of Mobile County into Mobile Bay. The Fowl River Watershed drains two smaller tributaries, Muddy Creek and Dykes Creek, both of which are located in the central portion of the watershed. Because of its proximity to Mobile Bay, the lower portions of the Fowl River watershed are tidally influenced. The watershed contains approximately 9,000 acres of wetlands that account for more than 20% of the watershed’s land cover. While Bellingrath Gardens* opened to the public in 1932, it originally was a rustic fishing camp for Walter and Bessie Bellingrath. The couple eventually decided to turn the property into a garden estate after being inspired by the garden estates while traveling throughout Europe. It now encompasses approximately 900 acres along Fowl River. In 1977, the site was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage, and, in 1982, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
