Restoration Specialist

Location: Mobile, Alabama

About the Role

The Restoration Specialist at Mobile Baykeeper will oversee the planning, execution, and leadership of restoration projects. As the Restoration Specialist, you will spearhead Mobile Baykeeper’s efforts to restore the oyster population in Mobile Bay including through the ongoing oyster gardening program. This role is pivotal in expanding the impact of Mobile Baykeeper’s restoration efforts across various ecosystems within Mobile Bay. 

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership and Management: 

  • Lead the planning, execution, and expansion of restoration projects, adhering to science-based best practices and Mobile Baykeeper’s strategic goals. 

Project Development and Innovation: 

  • Develop and manage innovative restoration projects, incorporating new technologies and methodologies to bolster oyster populations and facilitate the return of our submerged aquatic vegetation. 
  • Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders to scale up restoration efforts effectively. 

Resource Management and Reporting: 

  • Oversee the financial aspects of restoration projects, including budgeting, grant management, and reporting. 
  • Ensure accurate tracking of project progress & regular reporting on key results. 

Team Development and Oversight: 

  • Recruit, train, and lead a team to effectively achieve operational and strategic objectives. 

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • M.S. with focus on ecology and restoration or similar studies 
  • 2+ years field experience in oyster aquaculture, marine science, or a related natural resource management field. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects in bays and coastal environments, with a track record of achieving quantitative goals. 
  • Competency in operating vessels, managing field equipment, and applying scientific principles to restoration work. 
  • Relevant experience in project management preferred. 

Performance Indicators

  • Achievement of project milestones, including the successful cultivation and deployment of oyster populations in Mobile Bay. 
  • Scaling of restoration efforts through the successful execution of the Oyster Gardening Program and effective planning and execution of additional restoration projects. 

Day in the Life

  • Overseeing maintenance & monitoring of oyster gardens. 
  • Working with subject matter experts and team members to imagine, develop, and implement new projects to scale restoration efforts. 
  • Engaging with stakeholders and partners to align efforts and resources.
