About the Role
The Education Coordinator will be part of Mobile Baykeeper’s Environmental Education Team and work directly under the Education Director. Mobile Baykeeper is launching a new outdoor after-school program in Spring 2025 for students in grades 4-6, titled NextGen Baykeepers. The purpose of the program is to provide meaningful experiences on local waterways through kayaking to create the next generation of environmental stewards. The Education Coordinator will lead the NextGen Baykeeper program with the assistance of interns. Additionally, this position will spearhead education campaigns and a water quality monitoring program with local high schools.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the NextGen Baykeepers after-school program to create stewards of the waters of Coastal Alabama. Manage participants’ physical, social, and emotional safety/risk. 40%
- Facilitate field trips, workshops, presentations, and hands-on lessons with schools and community groups. 20%
- Teach students in a memorable way that changes behavior long-term to benefit the environment. 20%
- Work collaboratively with the Education Director and Education Interns to maintain the Environmental Education Team’s objectives, key results, programming, scheduling, financials, and protocols. 10%
- Develop and implement educational content and lessons related to local habitats, the flora and fauna of the lower Mobile Bay watershed, environmental stewardship principles, issues our waterways face, and solutions to environmental problems. 10%
Essential Skills and Qualifications
- Exhibit Baykeeper’s values of excellence, accuracy, responsibility, tenacity, and humility
- BA/BS in education or BS in biology (or Aquatic Science, or Environmental Science), OR equivalent years of experience working in the teaching and/or environmental sector or outdoor recreation sector
- Commitment to stewardship, conservation, and connecting people to the natural world
- Have an interest in, respect for, and ability to work with adults and youth
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills
- Experience kayaking on local waterways
- Have an interest in science, environmental studies, nature, or related field and an interest in sharing this subject with other people
- Ability to swim and comfortable with water recreation activities
- Ability to lift 40 pounds and work outdoors in hot, humid conditions
Desired Skills
- Exhibits a passion for environmental education and inspiring others to become stewards of the environment
- Some teaching experience is preferable but not required
- Knowledgeable about the local ecosystem and/or environmental science
- Experience with designing and implementing hands-on environmental lessons is preferred
- Exhibits the ability to switch between a variety of tasks quickly and smoothly
- Experience managing and maintaining equipment for outdoor recreation
