AmeriCorps Patrol/Oyster Gardening Program

Mobile Baykeeper is hiring AmeriCorps Members through the  Governor’s Office of Volunteer Services to build capacity in the Baykeeper Patrol Program, Volunteer Program, and Environmental Education. These programs directly support Mobile Baykeeper’s mission and help us defend and revive the health of the waters of Coastal Alabama. 

General Information

  • Position location: Mobile Baykeeper, Downtown Mobile, AL
  • Service term: October 1, 2023 – September 30, 2024; 25 hours/week for part-time positions and 40 hours/week for full-time positions.

The Baykeeper Patrol Program researches local pollution problems to improve water quality, reduce impacts from stormwater, sewer, and/or industrial pollution. AmeriCorps Members will work in target areas of Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Core activities include conducting site inspections, patrolling local waterways, assisting with comment letters and policy issues, investigating citizen concerns, collecting water quality samples, documenting environmental pollution, and creating environmental issue fact sheets. AmeriCorps Members will receive experience with environmental issues including stormwater, sewer, and industrial pollution, state and federal regulations and permit reviews and gain skills in field sampling techniques. Members of the Patrol Team also assist Mobile Baykeeper in executing restoration projects that the organization engages in such as volunteer oyster gardening. Restoration activities will likely involve working to grow oysters, establish submerged aquatic vegetation, install living shoreline, and/or pursue other projects that improve the health of Mobile Bay.

 Qualifications:

  • Background of study and/or experience in Environmental Science/Studies, Environmental Policy, Resource Management, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or related field
  • Strong critical and analytical thinking skills
  • Experience conducting tests and field investigations to obtain data
  • Ability to utilize knowledge of agriculture, chemistry, biology, geology, meteorology, and engineering principles and applied technologies
  • Ability to learn chemical and physical laboratory and field tests according to prescribed standards using field and chemical laboratory equipment
  • Superb written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills
  • Ability to understand and process technical processes and policy information
  • Comfortable working in adverse environmental conditions for long hours
  • Ability to fill out data forms in the field and compile data in tabular and graphical form
  • Experience with Oysters
  • AmeriCorps Members must meet all eligibility requirements in 45 CFR §2522.200(a). 
  • AmeriCorps Members must meet all Mobile Baykeeper and AmeriCorps clearance and background check requirements. Members agree to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Criminal History Check as outlined in 45 CFR §2522.202. 
  • All positions require the applicant to have knowledge of and a commitment to environmental protection, experience with Microsoft-based products (Word, Excel, Outlook), the ability to learn new software/applications quickly, and the ability to lift 50 lbs. and feel comfortable carrying heavy items
