Team AmeriCorps Members
AmeriCorps is a voluntary civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work with a goal of “helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.” Mobile Baykeeper AmeriCorps Members make up three teams: Patrol (water quality monitoring, responding to citizen concerns), SWAMP (environmental education and monitor training), and Volunteer Engagement (organizing cleanups, recruiting volunteers for events). Edward is a student at The University of South Alabama who recently began pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Born and raised in a homeschooled family on Dauphin Island, Edward’s first playground was the woods, sand dunes, beaches, and salt marshes of the island which fostered his love of nature. Edward experienced first-hand Hurricane
Katrina and the BP Oil Spill, which shaped his understanding of environmental protection and the consequences of environmental negligence. Edward attended Auburn University for Anthropology and Sustainability. After graduating and working as a caregiver for two years, he returned to school this fall and sought a position with Mobile Baykeeper to become more firmly rooted in the local environmental landscape and the Mobile community. He loves gardening, hiking, paddling, and traveling in his free time.
Lucy has lived on the Gulf Coast since the age of two. She graduated from the University of South Alabama with a B.A. in Biology and a concentration in Environmental Sciences. In college, she took a wide range of science and environmental classes, but it wasn’t until her Geology and Conservation courses that she knew where she belonged on the spectrum of scientific careers. The outdoors have always been a place of peace and tranquility for Lucy, and where she felt most like herself. She has been with Mobile Baykeeper as an AmeriCorps Volunteer Engagement member twice; she is now back for a third term.
Her goal is to one day work as a wildlife biologist, geologist, or National Park Ranger. When she is not advocating for clean water, she is jamming to Disney tunes, enjoying a campfire with friends, indulging in the latest coffee craze, being a dog mom, or reading the latest book.
Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Jade fell in love with the Gulf Coast when she moved here to attend the University of South Alabama. She is currently in her senior year, majoring in Geography with a minor in Biology. Growing up in rural Alabama, she developed a deep respect for nature and wildlife. In her academic studies, she has taken advantage of many research opportunities, such as studying geography in Germany and researching the hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico. She is looking forward to an upcoming research project in the Galapagos Islands. She hopes these experiences will help her advocate for Alabama’s Gulf Coast and the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.
Wanting to find a way to best serve her community, she sought out working for a local non-profit and is ecstatic to be working as a member of Baykeeeper’s AmeriCorps Patrol Team. In her spare time, she enjoys kayaking, walking nature trails, and hanging out with her two cats, Ophelia and Kitty Kat.etter steward of our environment.
Born and raised in Mobile, Reagan ventured out to the small town of Troy, Alabama, to attend Troy University. She plans to graduate in December 2022 with a B.S. in biology and a double minor in German and the humanities. She was always interested in marine conservation, but she didn’t know what she wanted to do with it until her year-long study abroad experience in Germany. It offered her something America didn’t: viewing the environment as an interdisciplinary subject to make it more accessible to herself and other people.
She hopes to bring this to Mobile Baykeeper and the schools she educates through her position with AEE. In her free time, Reagan enjoys reading her growing collection of books, spending time with her friends and family, and drinking a little too much coffee.
Born and raised in Daphne, Alabama, Taylor graduated from the University of South Alabama with a B.S in Biology, a Geology minor, and a concentration in Marine Science. During her senior year, she volunteered at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Marine Mammal Center, assisting with the research of pollutants present in bottlenose dolphin tissue. In January, she interned with the Ocean Mammal Internship, studying humpback whales and their interactions with vessel traffic. The internship opened her eyes to the importance of managing human and animal interactions. Currently, her focus has shifted to management of resources and she is pursuing a graduate degree in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of Denver.
The chance to work with AmeriCorps as a Mobile Baykeeper Patrol Team Member seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore the ins and outs of working for a non-profit environmental organization. In her spare time Taylor enjoys hiking, going to the beach, and spending time with friends and family.
Josh was born and raised in the Mobile area. He received a B.A. in English from The University of Alabama. As a kid growing up in southern Mobile County, he remembers going out with his grandparents on the bays and bayous of the area, where his love of the coast began. Josh enjoys exploring the coastal waters of Alabama as well as those of nearby states. He is also passionate about native plants and gardening.
After moving back to Mobile last year, Josh discovered Mobile Baykeeper and felt inspired to apply for the AmeriCorps position in order to reconnect with the area he grew up in. Josh wants to use his time at Mobile Baykeeper to help protect the waters that he, his family, and his community depend on.
