BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster

Since the BP Oil Disaster on April 20, 2010, Mobile Baykeeper has worked on both immediate response needs for coastal communities as well as the need for long-term recovery and restoration of our area.  We continue to closely monitor the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process, decisions regarding Clean Water Act fines, the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, and Alabama’s Coastal Recovery Commission.  Throughout the process, Mobile Baykeeper has continued to advocate for ongoing monitoring, transparency, community involvement, and Clean Water Act fines returning to the Gulf Coast for restoration.  We believe environmental restoration is the key to the economic recovery of the Gulf Coast.

To engage local citizens, we coordinated with Alabama Coastal Foundation to establish the Volunteer Field Observer (VFOB) Program to monitor Alabama’s tidally influenced shoreline for oil impacts and other changes.  Through this effort, we have trained over 300 volunteers to monitor Alabama’s shoreline for oil impacts and other changes or problems associated with the oil spill.  We continue to work together, and with our Waterkeeper partners at Save Our Gulf, to collect information about ongoing changes resulting from this event.
