Environmental Matters

Mobile Baykeeper works with citizens, civic leaders and the business and industrial community to improve our communities, protect our families and preserve the beautiful environment around us. We have found that there are solutions to environmental problems, and that by working together we can ensure that our health and natural resources – especially Mobile Bay – remain our most precious commodity.

Our priority areas include:

Clean Air, Clean Water, Healthy People – Mobile Baykeeper has dedicated itself to this goal since the organization’s inception. We work on all environmental issues in the Watershed that impact public health. By following air and water permit applications we are able to track chemicals that enter the eco-system, determine whether or not those chemicals affect public health, and work for their removal if needed. We strive to protect the community’s quality of life by ensuring that industry complies with existing environmental regulations and strengthening or developing additional regulations where necessary.

Responsible Government – Without responsible government, we are helpless to protect the environment and public health. It is imperative that the agencies charged with enforcing laws such as the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Clean Air Act and the Coastal Zone Management Act do so. Mobile Baykeeper acts as a community watchdog to ensure that government agencies strictly enforce local, state and federal law. We also believe that elected officials will make more responsible choices if they understand the importance of a healthy environment to our community. To that end, we have added a component of land use planning to our programs.

Healthy Economy – A healthy and balanced economy is good for the environment and the community. Smoke-stack industries have been the center of South Alabama’s economy for decades. We encourage diversification of the local economy and the addition of sustainable jobs that will not harm the environment or public health. We hope to expand South Alabama’s economic base, not limit its possibilities.
