How to Report Oil in 2012

Immediately following the Deepwater Horizon explosion, crisis response centers were set up all along the coast. Now, nearly two years out and with oil still washing ashore, do you know who to call if you find oil?

A New Year....A New Chance for the RESTORE Act

It is a new year, a new beginning and another chance for the RESTORE Act to become law.   While there was a tremendous effort to pass the RESTORE Act before the close of 2011, the year ended without its passage and without these much needed restoration dollars sent to the Gulf Coast.

Happy New Year and Baykeeper Resolutions

2012 marks Mobile Baykeeper’s 15th anniversary, and we have spent the end of 2011 planning for the future.  We’ve cleaned off our desks and are gearing up to kick off this new year with a focused effort to see lasting change for our environment, economy and communities.

Baykeeper 101: Christmas

What’s Happening?

As the song says, “it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”. With people beginning to decorate their homes with lights, garland and evergreens, the holiday season is upon us. The holidays can often be crazy and stressful with malls packed and traffic a mess. Through all the chaos, lets not forget the importance of staying green through the holidays. I have found some easy and environmentally friendly tips to add to your holiday traditions.

Mobile Baykeeper welcomes Bethany Olson to the team!

Hi everyone! After interning with Mobile Baykeeper for the month of January I am back for a full year to take Nicole’s place as the Oil Spill VISTA! I am very excited about the work to be done, the opportunities I’ll have to work in the community, and the difference I hope to make. I know that I have big shoes to fill after Nicole’s hard word and dedication, but I am up to the challenge!

Member Concerns at Mobile Baykeeper

Mobile Baykeeper responds to environmental concerns in the Mobile Bay Watershed in a number of ways, but one of the most important things that we do is respond to “Member Concerns”.   These concerns from our members and our community are the crux of our work.  They guide the issues we work on and the projects we pursue.  The most obvious of these is last summer’s oil disaster.  We received thousands of calls in response to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and the concerns our community had about oil washing ashore in Alabama.

RESTORE the Gulf: SB1400

Senate Bill 1400, or RESTORE (Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourism Opportunities and Revived Economy of the Gulf Coast) Act was introduced into the Senate with the support of Senators from all five Gulf Coast states.  This legislation would bring 80% of the Clean Water Act penalties back to the Gulf Coast for Restoration.  Without legislation from Congress, these penalties will go into the Federal Treasury, and we are excited to have a bill that would bring them back to the Gulf Coast where they are so critically needed for restoration.
